NEW DELHI: Though Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has not been denied an entry in the UK, all’s still not well.
Jeff Wilson, spokesman of the British High Commission said, "He had an existing visa and we saw no reason to deny him the right to travel on this visa, provided he travels to the UK within the period of its validity."
However, the High Commission was quick to add a caveat.
Jeff Wilson said, "We have a working policy to have no contact with the Gujarat state government. It is because of our concerns over what happened in Gujarat."
The British High Commission conducted an internal inquiry after the Gujarat riots in February 2002.
The inquiry was triggered after a British national of Gujarati origin died in the violence. Though the contents of the report have not been disclosed, it estimates the death toll close to 2,000.
Modi has plans of travelling to the UK end of this week to participate in the "Vibrant Gujarat" celebrations.
