Shah being made a scapegoat to save Modi: Congress

Shah being made a scapegoat to save Modi: Congress

New Delhi, July 25 – The Congress Sunday alleged Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were making a ’scapegoat’ of former state home minister Amit Shah, charged with involvement in the 2005 killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh in a staged shoot-out, to deflect attention from Modi.

‘Amit Shah and Modi saying that CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) is being used as a political tool is an illogical defence mechanism. Ultimately the court will ask certain uncomfortable questions and the investigations will lead to Modi. Modi and the BJP are trying to create a block here and are making Amit Shah the scapegoat,’ Congress spokesman Shakeel Ahmed told IANS.

Another party spokesman, Manish Tewari, appearing on Times Now, accused Amit Shah and the BJP of not having read the affidavit filed by the state, adding ‘they are advised to read the affidavit (submitted in 2007 by Inspector General of Police Geeta Johri) before shooting their mouth off… why not speak in defence to the investigating agency instead of going public while absconding’?

Shah, who was missing since Thursday, surfaced dramatically at a press conference of Gujarat BJP state chief R.C. Fardu in Ahmedabad in the morning and said the allegations against him were fabricated.

The ex-minister, who has been chargesheeted by the CBI, said he was being framed by the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government in New Delhi in a desperate bid to ‘counter’ the Narendra Modi government.

‘The accusations against me are fabricated, politically motivated and framed on the behest of the Congress government,’ Shah told reporters, before leaving from the CBI camp office to give himself up. He was later sent to 14 days judicial custody.

Shah submitted his resignation to Narendra Modi Saturday.

New Delhi, March 27 – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Saturday said people ’should feel proud of’ Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for appearing before the Supreme Court-appointed probe panel investigating the 2002 Gujarat riots.

BJP spokesman Ramnath Kovind said that Modi was a law abiding chief minister and termed the criticism of him by opposition parties including the Congress as ‘absurd’.

‘If he did not appear before the panel, then they would criticise. Now, for appearing before the panel, they are creating a hype. This is absurd,’ Kovind told IANS.

Modi appeared before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) in Gandhinagar Saturday for questioning following a complaint by Zakia Jaffri, widow of former Congress MP Ehsan Jaffri, who was killed in the riots. Zakia had alleged that Modi was party to the violence in the state eight years ago.

Kovind said the Congress had no moral right to criticise Modi or the BJP over the 2002 riots because the Congress-led government had failed to give justice to Sikhs who were ‘brutally massacred’ in 1984.

‘The main culprits in the anti-Sikh riots are top Congress leaders. People like Sajjan Kumar and Jagdish Tytler were promoted as MPs and ministers. They are still trying to avoid the investigating agencies. Sikhs are still waiting for justice,’ Kovind said.

New Delhi, Dec.3 : The Supreme Court (SC) appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) is reported to have given a clean chit to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

Narendra Modi has long been alleged to connive with 62 others including some cabinet colleagues, police officials and bureaucrats in aiding and abetting the post-Godhra program that claimed 1000 lives in 2002.

The SIT grilled Narendra Modi a few months ago after the SC directed it to enquire into the allegations by the wife of a former Congress MP who was killed in the carnage along with 69 others. According to some newspaper reports the SIT gave a clean chit to Modi as it couldn’t find evidence to substantiate his alleged connivance in the riots.

Arun Jaitley, leader of the opposition in Rajya Sabha, said, ” The matter is sub-judice and we can’t be sure of what the SIT has said.” e added that if the Modi’s reported acquittal by the SIT is true than their long-standing stand is finally vindicated.(ANI)
