Former Gujarat Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday told the Supreme Court that the Centre had hatched a conspiracy with CBI to target Chief Minister Narendra Modi and his government in false encounter cases.

Appearing before a Bench of justices P Sathasivam and B S Chauhan, senior counsel Ram Jethmalani said the central government was targetting Modi due to political reasons and Shah was only a medium through which it could achieve it.

"It is just an illusion to say that CBI is a premier investigating agency. It was initially conceived as an anti-corruption agency but I regret to say that there is conclusive evidence to prove that the agency is subordinate to the political party in power.

"There is evidence to prove that there is a conspiracy between CBI and the central government to target a democratically-elected government that is a thorn to it. The idea is to first target Amit Shah and then fix Chief Minister Narendra Modi and his government," Jethmalani told the apex court.

Astrologers forecast short-lived government

Astrologers forecast short-lived government
New Delhi: A rare change of position by Jupiter, which stargazers say happens once in 30 years, is likely to have a mixed effect on India. Astrologers predict good times for Indian economy, but also warn against political turbulence in the days ahead. If they are to be believed, the new government formed after May 16 will not last for more than 18 months, with strong indications of another election in late 2010 or early 2011.

“No party will be able to form a government. I see a third front forming a government with either Congress or BJP support and a dark horse from India’s eastern part becoming the PM,’’ said Ashok Vasudeva of Astromatics magazine.
‘Singh, Advani don’t have ‘raj yog’ to be PM’

New Delhi: Astrologers are blaming a rare celestial occurrence for their pessimistic political predictions.

Usually, Jupiter moves from one zodiac to another after 13 months, but this time changed places within five months and is likely to go back to Capricorn after two months. “Jupiter is a very strong planet, but its effect is weak when it is in Capricorn. But it has good long-term results when it is in Aquarius. But the planet will retrograde after two-and-a-half months and go back to Capricorn. This means the government formed after May 16 will start facing trouble August onwards and the instability will continue. It will result in re-election,” says Mukesh Jain, a Delhi astrologer.

Astrologers say neither Manmohan Singh nor L K Advani have the “raj yog” to become PM in the next government. “Singh’s sade satti (seven-anda-half cycle of Saturn) will end on September 10 this year. He is one of the few who prosper during sade satti. With this being the last, he’s enjoyed three sade sattis. He doesn’t have a chance of being PM again. Advani doesn’t have a strong horoscope and can never be PM,” says jyotishacharya Ashok Vasudev.

Indian politics is going through a rough phase and it will continue till next year. But women are likely to play a major role. “May is governed by Venus and women are going to play the role of kingmakers. Mayawati, Sonia Gandhi, Jayalalithaa and Mamata Banerjee will play a key role. The effect of Jupiter will weaken when it retrogrades and political disturbances will start then,” says Prof Viveik Choppra, an expert in astro-vastu science.

Some politicians are destined to play a crucial role in future. “This change in Jupiter’s position has made Pranab Mukherjee’s sign even stronger. He is in the best phase and will play a decisive role. 2012 will see the rise of Gujarat CM Narendra Modi and he will be unstoppable,” says Naveen Khanna, a political astrologer.

Some astrologers feel this instability in Indian politics will result in major changes in the constitution of India. “The regional forces will die after the fall of the government, some time in June 2010. The new government formed after the re-election will be stable,” Vasudev predicts.

Follow Gujarat in fighting climate change: Kalam

Ahmedabad: The former President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, and the chairman of the Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), R.K. Pachauri, on December 21 recommended that climate change should become the center of all developmental policies and actions, and advised other states to follow the lead given by Gujarat in this direction.

Speaking at a function for the release of a book, Convenient Action: Gujarat’s Response to Climate Change, written by Chief Minister Narendra Modi, which details the steps taken in Gujarat to meet the challenge, A.P.J. Kalam said the problem of climate change could not be viewed in isolation, and that India must immediately adopt long-term programs like the Integrated Water Connections and Energy Independent Mission and focus on renewable sources of energy to achieve the goals in the next two decades.

A.P.J. Kalam said he was ‘inspired” by Narendra Modi’s “beautiful book” and Gujarat’s program on linking rivers, which helped rejuvenate the Sabarmati river and solve many of health and other problems in Ahmedabad.

A.P.J. Kalam said he had always believed that state-wise linking of rivers was a must, and had given detailed proposals to states like Andhra Pradesh and Kerala. He said: “This would not only solve perennial water problems, both for drinking and agricultural purposes, but also arrest the flooding of large areas every year and save over $ 500 million, which the government was forced to spend for short-term relief measures for the flood-affected.”

Appreciating Gujarat’s agricultural growth — which he said was three times higher than the national average, despite it being a drought-prone state — A.P.J. Kalam said that the construction of a series of check-dams, village bunds and other water conservation methods had largely contributed to achieving the goal.

R.K. Pachauri, who is also director-general of The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), said the world had no time to waste and wait for cent-per-cent scientific proof that climate change was affecting the earth. “Our future generation is moving towards destruction every minute; climate change is a reality and what is happening around us already is enough to compel us for actions.”

Narendra Modi, who was acclaimed as only the second political leader in the world, after former US Vice-President Al Gore, in writing a book on climate change – said that Indian scriptures written thousands of years ago had mentioned possible climate change and had given solutions, but not many people had the intention to follow the same. He said his inspiration came from Al Gore’s book An Inconvenient Truth, which highlighted the resistance that people usually develop for any inconveniences caused by the problems arising out of climate change.

Over 100 kite-flying enthusiasts from 37 different countries participated in the Kite Festival. Besides these foreigners, 150 participants from across the country also showed their kite-flying skills during the festival.

The move, which is being finalized after Modi met the majors in Hyderabad, is causing alarm bells to ring in the poll bound Tamil Nadu. The auto companies had made Chennai’s neighborhood Marmalainagar their base, giving it the nickname of “Detroit of India” when AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa was Chief Mini-ster between 2001 to 2006.

A Congress MP, K.S. Alagiri, has petitioned Commerce Minister Anand Sharma, but he has been told that the Center couldn’t do much because Gujarat is offering “better power and labor environment.” Sharma, who spoke to the auto majors, told Alagiri that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi should step in to prevent an exodus from his state to Gujarat.
Alagiri said that “if the ongoing negotiations with Gujarat succeeds, Tamil Nadu would lose at least 50,000 jobs directly and another one lakh jobs indirectly in the ancillary segment.”

Blaming Modi for initiating a rat-race by luring the Tatas to put up the Nano plants there two years ago, he said, the Gujarat Chief Minister would soon urge the software industry to shift from Banglore to Ahmedabad.
“This would only lead to industrial investment getting concentrated in one state, thereby heightening haphazard growth,” he said. In neighboring Kerala, there’s new debate over Modi.

CPI (M) leader Pinarayi Vijayan kicked off a controversy after his comment on the “efficiency” of the Chief Minister-cum-Industry Minister of an unnamed state, which was widely interpreted as an endorsement of Modi.
After his rival, Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, attacked Modi’s policies in response to Vijayan’s remark, Vijayan came out with a statement that he meant Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Karunanidhi.
