New York: The Overseas Friends of Bharatiya Janata Party organized a protest near the Indian Consulate in New York on September 26, alleging harassment of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi by the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance.

The demonstrators carried placards which said, “Stop Harassing Narendra Modi,” “Stop the Misuse of Central Bureau Investigation” and alleged that the CBI was turning into the “Congress bureau of intimidation.”

‘The Congress government is jealous of Narendra Modi’s popularity. It is using the CBI to malign him and tarnish his image in the eyes of public,” said Dr. Vijay Laxmi, vice president of Andhara Pradesh BJP, who is currently on a visit to the US.

Dr. Sudhakar Reddy, chief advisor to the national executive of OFBJP, claimed that nearly 200 people joined the protest. They later handed over a memorandum addressed to President Pratibha Patil to the consulate officials.

The memorandum also noted that India Today magazine had consistently ranked Modi as the best Chief Mminister in its annual rankings for several years in a row. Gita Johri, an IPS officer, too accused the CBI of pressurizing her to give a statement against Modi, they claimed.

“The popularity of Modi is increasing day by day. He has nationwide popularity. We suspect that the intention of the UPA government is malicious and it wants to defame Modi,” it said.

“It is a matter of great disgrace that UPA government, headed by Sonia Gandhi, is fabricating false charges against Modi in an insidious attempt to defame and denigrate him and destroy his credibility,” said Narain Kataria, one of the organizers.

Reddy justified holding the protest abroad, saying it was the duty of the Indians to oppose injustice.

Gandhinagar Reacting a day after Singh's allegations that the BJP had scuttled reforms because action was being taken day against a Gujarat minister (read former Home Minister Amit Shah), the state's Chief minister Narendra Modi said Singh's allegations was the biggest joke of 2011.

Modi said the Prime Minister was levelling allegation against Gujarat to “divert public attention from his failures”.

Modi told television channels at his official residence on Thursday: "Yesterday's press by the PM was a failed attempt to wash black spots from his image. To save his self, he is trying to corner Gujarat and levelling allegations on a Gujarat minister.”

Modi was equally harsh on his reaction to Singh's charge that his state has opposed economic reforms like the Goods and Service Tax (GST). He said: “"Gujarat and the BJP has cleared its stand on reforms like GST since the beginning. A year ago, when I met finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, I told him we cannot implement it before creating the nationwide network for GST. Mukherjee also agreed to my suggestion and immediately called his personal secretary and ordered him to form a taskforce for this. However, till date, there is no progress. I challenge the PM to make the minutes of the GST empowerment committee public and let the people know what suggestions Gujarat and other states have made in last two years."

Modi further alleged the PM and his party is responsible for the “lack of economic reforms”. “Let the PM disclose all information to the public and let them decide who stalled the reforms,” he said.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar may have a strong antipathy for his Gujarat counterpart, but the country's apex trade body – Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) wants the JD (U) strongman to treat Narendra Modi as a role model if he is keen on substantial investment in Bihar.

“No doubt, Nitish has got an unprecedented mandate. But to make industrialists put in their money in Bihar, Nitish will have to draw some lessons from Modi, develop a new work culture and fine-tune the lackadaisical bureaucracy,” national Secretary General of ASSOCHAM, D S Rawat told Deccan Herald here on Sunday.

Rawat was in Patna to congratulate Nitish on his landslide victory. To buttress his point, the apex trade body office-bearer cited the example of Narendra Modi, who invested 50 paise (sent a sms to Ratan Tata) and was successful in attracting an investment of more than Rs 1,500 crore for the Nano project at Sanand in Gujarat. “No matter how brute a majority you get, the most important thing is to change the mindset of sloth babus and develop a new work culture if you really want top honchos to invest in Bihar,” Rawat made a clean breast.

To illustrate his point, Rawat cited the example of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. “Till a few years back, MP was treated as one of the bimaru (sick) States. (Bi-ma-r-u actually refers to Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh). But when we organised Investmart in MP, MoUs worth Rs 2.53 lakh crore were signed in just two days in September 2010,” revealed Rawat.

This happened, he said, because Chouhan not only rolled out a red carpet for top industrialists, but also arranged three chartered flights for them and asked officers of Principal Secretary-level to receive them at the airport. “This way he sent a message that apart from land bank, his government was more than willing to help all those who were keen on investing in Madhya Pradesh,” said Rawat.

But as a first step to invest in Bihar, the ASSOCHAM is planning to organise an Investmart in Patna in April 2011 where MoUs worth Rs 50,000 crore will be signed. “Later MoUs worth Rs 1,25,000 crore will be signed in 2013 and Rs 1,75,000 crore in the year 2015,” said Rawat.
