Born on 17th September, 1950 at Vadnagar, a small town in Mehsana district of North Gujarat, Modi grew up in a culture that instilled in him the values of generosity, benevolence and social service. During the Indo-Pak war in the mid sixties, even as a young boy, he volunteered to serve the soldiers in transit at railway stations. In 1967, he served the flood affected people of Gujarat.

Endowed with excellent organizational capability and a rich insight into human psychology, he was elected as the student leader of Akhil Bhartiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (All India Students’ Council) and played a prominent role in various socio-political movements in Gujarat.

Right from his boyhood days he was confronted with many odds and obstacles, but he transformed challenges into opportunities by sheer strength of character and courage. Particularly when he joined the college and the University for higher education, his path was beset with hard struggle and painful toil. But in the battle of life he has been always a fighter, a true soldier. Having put his step forward he never looked back. He refused to drop out or be defeated. It was this commitment which enabled him to complete his post graduation in political science. He started with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a socio-cultural organization with a focus on social and cultural development of India and imbibed the spirit of selflessness, social responsibility, dedication and nationalism.

During his tenure with the RSS, Modi played several important roles on various occasions including the 1974 anti-corruption agitation and the harrowing 19-month (June 1975 to January 1977) long ‘emergency’ when the fundamental rights of Indian citizens were strangled. Modi kept the spirit of democracy alive by going underground for the entire period and fighting a spirited battle against the fascist ways of the then central government.

He entered the mainstream politics in 1987 by joining the BJP. Just within a year, he was elevated to the level of the General Secretary of the Gujarat unit. By that time he had already acquired the reputation of being a highly efficient organizer. He took up the challenging task of energizing the party cadres in right earnest. The party started gaining political mileage and formed a coalition government at the centre in April 1990. This partnership fell apart within a few months, but the BJP came to power with a two-third majority on its own in Gujarat in 1995. Since then, the BJP has been the ruling party in Gujarat.

Between 1988 and 1995, Modi was recognized as a master strategist who had successfully gained the necessary groundwork for making the Gujarat BJP the ruling party of the state. During this period, Modi was entrusted with the responsibility of organizing two crucial national events, the Somnath to Ayodhya Rath Yatra (a very long march) of Shri L.K. Advani and a similar march from Kanyakumari (the southernmost part of India) to Kashmir in the North. The ascent of the BJP to power at New Delhi in 1998 has been attributed to these two highly successful events, substantially handled by Modi.

In 1995, he was appointed the National Secretary of the party and given the charge of five major states in India – a rare distinction for a young leader. In 1998, he was promoted as the General Secretary (Organization), a post he held until October 2001, when he was chosen to be the Chief Minister of Gujarat, one of the most prosperous and progressive states of India.

During his stint at the national level, Modi was given the responsibility to oversee the affairs of several state level units, including the sensitive and crucial states like Jammu and Kashmir and the equally sensitive north-eastern states. He was responsible for revamping the party organization in several states. While working at the national level, Modi emerged as an important spokesman for the party and played a key role on several important occasions.

During this period, he travelled extensively across the world and interacted with the eminent leaders of several countries. These experiences not only helped him develop a global perspective but also intensified his passion to serve India and lead it towards the socio-economic supremacy in the comity of nations.

In October 2001, he was called upon by the party to lead the Government in Gujarat. When the Modi government was sworn in on October 7, 2001, the economy of Gujarat was reeling under the adverse effects of several natural calamities, including a massive earthquake in January 2001. However Modi, a master strategist, who was enriched by national and international exposure and experience, decided to take the bull by its horns.

The biggest challenge which he had to face, when he took over as the Chief Minster, was the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the areas affected by the massive earthquake of January 2001. Bhuj was a city of rubble and thousands of people were living in temporary shelters without any basic infrastructure. Today Bhuj is a proof of how Modi has turned an adversity into an opportunity for holistic development.

Even when the reconstruction and rehabilitation was going on, Modi did not lose sight of the bigger picture. Gujarat had always focused on industrial growth. Modi decided to correct the imbalance by focusing appropriately on social sectors for an integrated socio-economic growth. He conceived the Panchamrit Yojana – a five-pronged strategy for an integrated development of the state.

Under his leadership, Gujarat is witnessing massive transformation in several sectors including education, agriculture, healthcare and several others. He developed a clear vision of his own for the future of the state, launched policy-driven reform programmes, reoriented government’s administrative structure and successfully put Gujarat on the road to prosperity. His intentions and capacity were noticed within the first 100 days of his coming to power. Little wonder that these skills coupled with his administrative acumen, clear vision and integrity of character translated into a landslide victory in the December 2002 general elections and the Modi government was voted back to power with a massive majority of 128 seats in a house of 182.

This victory was even more impressive than what is suggested by the figures because of the fact that the opposition Congress party had concentrated its nationwide resources on the Gujarat elections. Skilfully wading his way through the onslaught of a massive slander campaign unleashed by the opposition, Modi gave crushing defeat to the principal opposition party, the magnitude of which stunned all friends and foes alike.

On December 22, 2002, when he was sworn-in as the chief minister of Gujarat for the second time, the ceremony had to be held in an open-air stadium because of the sheer number of people who wanted to watch and hear the leader they had so overwhelmingly elected.

People’s expectations have been more than fulfilled. Today Gujarat is leading the nation in a variety of sectors be it e-Governance, investments, poverty eradication, power, SEZs, road development, fiscal discipline and many more. The heart of the matter is the people’s participation.

Fighting against all odds, he ensured that the Narmada dam reached 121.9m. Height – He even observed fast to counteract those obstructing the construction. "Sujalam Sufalam" – a scheme to create a grid of water resources in Gujarat is yet another innovative step towards water conservation and its appropriate utilization.

The novel ideas like introduction of Soil Health Cards, Roaming Ration Cards and Roaming School Cards show his concern for even the most common man of the state.

His initiatives such as Krishi Mahotsav, Chiranjeevi Yojana, Matru Vandana, Beti Bachao campaign (save the girl child), Jyotigram Yojana, and Karmayogi Abhiyan etc. aim at multi-dimensional development of Gujarat. The vision, concept and time-bound implementation of such initiatives is what makes Modi stand out as a true statesman who thinks of the next generation against the backdrop of politicians who just think about the next elections only.

Widely regarded as a youthful and energetic mass leader with innovative thoughts, Modi has successfully communicated his vision to the people of Gujarat and has been able to impart faith, trust and hope among more than 50 million people of Gujarat. His outstanding memory of addressing lacs of people, even common men, by their first name has made him the darling of the masses. His immense respect for spiritual leaders has helped build bridges across religions. A wide crosssection of the people of Gujarat, cutting across income groups, religions and even political affiliations, continue to adore Modi as an able and visionary leader who is transparently and convincingly uplifting the quality of their lives. A skilled orator and a deft negotiator, Modi has earned love of people from villages and cities alike. His following ranges over the people belonging to every faith and religion and every economic section of the society.

It is under his able leadership that Gujarat has bagged several awards and accolades from all over the world – including UN Sasakawa Award for disaster reduction, Commonwealth Association for Public Administration and Management (CAPAM) award for innovations in governance, UNESCO award, CSI award for e-Governance etc. The very fact that Modi has been ranked as the number one Chief Minister by the public for three consecutive years speaks volumes for his achievements.

His masterstroke of putting Gujarat on the global map essentially is ongoing campaign called the Vibrant Gujarat that truly transforms Gujarat into one of the most preferred investment destinations.

Gujarat has been registering double digit growth rates for the past several years. While Gujarat continues to accelerate on the path of growth and development, the voyager continues to walk tirelessly, leaving behind his footprints on the sands of time, transforming milestones into smilestones, step by step and marching towards the goal to celebrate the golden jubilee of the state in 2010, when Gujarat will proudly stand among developed economies of the world.

Even an overview of his journey in politics from grass-roots to the helm will speak volumes of his ever rising stature as a leader.

If one looks for the ideas and ideals of leadership, here is a classic role model showing how the youth, endowed with strength of character, courage, dedication and vision at once flowers into creative leadership. It is not quite common to see, in public life, a man with such profound spirit of service and fixity of purpose; loved so well by the people whom he loves so deeply. He has, in not so long span of time, emerged as the man of destiny.

Mr. Modi has a point. India has been back office of the world for a while now and yet to come up with a world class product. Only just recently was a But that was with the help of Intel. Without taking anything away from the chip makers, India do not have any thing big to compete with the likes of Google or Microsoft. Not yet.

The first generation entrepreneurs got lucky with the outsourcing boom and the 1991 de-regulation in India. Entrepreneurs now also are lucky with the abundance of capital available, which wasn’t available for Infosys or Naukri. From having an idea but no capital to having capital but few ideas India came a long way.

But there are some things that sill plague Indian entrepreneurs. Indians are in general, risk averse. They grew up by listening to their parents about how important it is to get a job and a secure a life. They grew up with the sole aim of getting into the public sector. Never once were they told to grow up one day and provide jobs. Never once were they told to take risks. This behavior is rooted into the DNA, since they were kids. With that kind of grooming how does one expect to leave a high paying IT job to start up one’s own show? I do not expect them to.

Another bigger problem is connectivity. Both electricity and Internet. Infrastructure in India is lousy at best. Internet is unreliable and so is the power. Google’s co-founders (Larry Page & Sergey Brin) started up with an audacious project of downloading the Internet. They did not know how big the Internet was. This was in 1996. Needless to say, the project later became Google. They did not download the Internet but they searched it instead. The point here is, Larry and Sergey could think about downloading the Internet because they did not have to worry about the Internet connection and the power supply. Now, How many universities or schools provide that kind of infrastructure in India? My guess is, not too many.

So the answer to Mr. Modi is this. There will be companies that are better than Google, that will be coming out of India. But, it is going to take some time. How long? I don’t know. That depends upon the kind of governance we get. India will be stuck with low-end and services for quite some time. If you want India to move up the value chain sooner, I got a suggestion.

Lashkar planned to kill Narendra Modi: Wikileaks

New Delhi, December 6: Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba had made elaborate plans in June last year to assassinate Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi, according to one of the American diplomatic cables made public by whistleblower website WikiLeaks.

The cable identifies a Pakistani Lashkar member, Shafiq, as the mastermind of the plot that was to be executed by a module led by an Indian Lashkar operative, Hussein. The hit job was to be carried out by one Sameer, an India-based Lashkar terrorist.

Modi has been on the hit list of jihadi terror groups who have cited the Gujarat riots during his tenure to find recruits and to radicalise sections of Indian Muslims.

The module, possibly led by Hussein in India, was tasked with two other jobs -- including establishment of a training camp and an "unspecified work" involving a car. Details were, however, not mentioned in the leaked US embassy cable which claimed to derive these information from "multiple sources".

The leaked cable, part of the `Diplomatic Security Daily' sent to Washington from different US missions, was despatched on June 19 last year. "LeT member Shafiq Khafa, possibly preparing for operation, and Hussein -- an India-based Lashkar-e-Taiba member -- continued operational planning on three tasks in early June.

The tasks were associated with a possible operation against Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi, the establishment of a training camp and unspecified work involving a car. Hussein would coordinate his activities with an India-based colleague identified as Sameer," the cable said.

Narendra Modi praises Amitabh Bachchan for keeping his commitment

Ahmedabad: Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi today said bolloywood actor Amitabh Bachchan has stood tall by fulfilling his commitment towards the state despite plenty of innuendos and accusations when he became the brand ambassador of the state.

Bachchan is scheduled to begin shooting for Gujarat Tourism from May 28.

Modi wrote in his blog, “Amitabhji is coming to Gujarat to promote tourism and I welcome him. Entire state is excited by his visit”.

“But I want to express my inner feelings. There were plenty of innuendos and accusations when he became the brand ambassador of Gujarat Tourism. Anybody in his place would have been shaken and backed out. Even his fans were worried whether he can withstand such onslaught,” Modi further said.

“But Amitabhji stood tall not only due to his physical height but also due to his determination in fulfilling his commitment,” Modi said.

Bachchan had to face criticism from Left parties and Congress, after he had agreed to become brand ambassador for Gujarat Tourism. Kerala Tourism had also offered him to become brand ambassador of that state’s tourism but the state had backed off after opposition from some to its leaders.

Bachchan had said that he has agreed to be brand ambassador of Gujarat Tourism, but not of any chief minister.

“For the sake of Gujarat and India, Amitabhji kept his words and this sort of commitment has set highest standard in professional ethics and has become a shining example for other professionals,” Modi further said in the blog.

“In this extreme heatwave conditions, when nobody from outside can even think of visiting Kutch even if paid, Amitabhji will spend three days in the white Rann of Kutch to promote tourism without charging a single penny,” Modi said.

Bachchan is scheduled to spend a week in Gujarat from May 28. He will be visiting Gir forest and Rann of Kutch and some other places for shooting of advertisement for promotion of Gujarat Tourism.

Gujarat is witnessing a rise in tourism thanks to its effective campaigns to promote the state's culture and tradition, Chief Minister Narendra Modi said Tuesday.

"Gujarat is achieving new milestones in tourism. And considering the progress we have made so far, there is no looking back," Modi said while inaugurating the 21st International Kite Festival in Ahmedabad.

According to Modi, the change-over began after his campaigns on promoting the state's culture and tradition.

"Gir national park, known for its lions, has seen a 55 percent increase in tourist visits in the last one year. This is an evidence of how effective the campaigns have been," he added.

Traditional garba dance, food festivals, and the Kite Festival have added to Gujarat's popularity, according to Modi.

State tourism ministry officials present at the kite festival said that roping in actor Amitabh Bachchan as its brand ambassador seems to have played well for Gujarat's tourism.

"Kutch and Dwarka have seen tremendous rise in tourist visits. Amitabh Bachchan's advertisements are generating interest amongst the Indian tourists also," said an official from the tourism ministry.

Gujarat tourism, attracting 1.65 crore visitors annually, is expected to witness a 30 percent increase, added the official.

Over 37 countries, including France, Italy, Vietnam, New Zealand and Ukraine, are participating in the Uttarayan kite festival festival.

The day-long festival has eight Indian states with over 150 participants and will be followed by the Jan 12-13 Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit.
